Here are the classes and education we offer:
High School Diploma At the Norwalk-La Mirada Adult School, we take pride in the extraordinary opportunities we provide for students to complete a High School Diploma. We offer: high school courses in a traditional setting taught by well-qualified teachers most high school courses are also available in an Individualized Learning Center where students work at their own pace individualized counseling and evaluation of students' transcripts from schools inside and outside the United States additional courses for students who are working to pass the California Exit Exam
GED The Norwalk-La Mirada Adult School has:
- an official GED Testing Center
- an Individualized Learning Center that provides morning and evening preparation (recommended)
- walk-in appointments without preparation
- There is a fee for preparation and official testing. Please contact the school for fee amount.
The GED is a series of 5 exams that test your knowledge at the high school level of general education materials. They are administered in the morning and evening once each month by appointment only.
If you complete all 5 exams you will receive a diploma equivalence certificate from the State of California. The GED has the same status as a high school diploma in seeking employment, further academic or vocational education, and financial aid.
Adult Basic Education
Basic Reading -Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced is offered on Tuesday and Thursday from 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The class teaches word attack skills, phonics, comprehension skills, and vocabulary development. Computers are used to assist learners to improve their reading and writing skills.
Basic Math- Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced is offered on Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Practice of basic math skills including whole numbers, fractions, and decimals is covered.
Math/Reading is offered Monday and Wednesday night at the La Mirada campus from 5:30 p.m to 8:30
English as a Second Language
The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is for non and limited English speakers who wish to learn, speak, read, and write English.
Free ESL Classes!
- Morning, afternoon, and evening
- Six levels for beginning, intermediate, or advanced students
- Provide practice for everyday conversation, to prepare for work or school, and for other real-life needs
- Offer specialized Community Based English Tutoring (CBET) which focuses on English skills for adults to help their children in school
- Offer alternative ways to learn such as the Distance Learning Program which uses video tapes that are checked out and taken home for a week
Aprenda Inglés En Casa Usted puede aprender Inglés gratis. Puede aprender a su propio paso. Este programa para adultos le puede ayudar a aprender Inglés en su hogar cuando usted tenga tiempo para estudiar. Este programa se llama “Aprendiendo a Distancia” y ha empezado en una escuela cercana a usted. Nunca es tarde para registrarse. A todos los estudiantes se les proveerá con una serie de videos los cuales podran ver en su hogar, junto con hojas de trabajo. l’enemos cuantro nieveles de videos empezando desde el primero hast el cuarto. Debe venire uno de los días asignados en su respective area. Puede traer su niño/a (s). Esperamos verles allí!
Career Technology The Career Technology Center allows students to choose the subjects they wish to study, and they progress at their own rate. Students may start and complete a class at any time. The Career Path Certificates are issued for Accounting Clerk, Administrative Assistant Secretary, General Office, Medical Records and Medical Transcriber. Classes in the lab include
- Accounting Clerk-Accounts Payable; Accounts Receivable; Office Cashier; Payroll; Computerized Record Keeping and Bookeeping
- Billing Clerk-Medical with Medisoft
- Business English
- Business Math
- Calculating Machine Operator
- Computer Software Applications-Microsoft Word; MS Excel; MS Access; MS PowerPoint; and MS Office
- Data Enty Clerk
- File Clerk
- Medical Transcriber-Introductory Vocabulary and Advanced Transcription
- Secretary Brush-up with Gregg
Materials Fee are $25 for the lab. Please see adult school counselors or the Career Technical Eduction teachers for more information about each course listed above. The structured classes are free and include Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Introduction to Computer Basics, PhotoShop, Geneology, Home Computer Use, Real Estate, Movie Maker, Computer Repair, Building Services and Computer Repair.
Parenting The Instructor in the Parenting class of the Norwalk-La Mirada Adult School is very knowlegeable and creative. This program
- teaches parents to better connect with their child
- gives parents an opportunity to have fun learning with their child in a positive environment
- gives the parent and child a time to participate in learning games, story time, and singing
- offers information and time for discussion about discipline and school readiness
- meets Monday and Wednesday at the La Mirada Campus
Homemaking The Homemaking Department of the Norwalk-La Mirada Adult School offers some of the best instruction available. The instructors are very knowledgeable in their fields and have a variety of techniques which they use to teach classic and current designs. You can learn how to decorate your home or garden, how to coordinate colors and designs and how to make some of the items that you wish to use.
